Songfacts®:

  • 2 Chainz's fellow Georgia-born rappers Gucci Mane and Migos' Quavo join him on this cut, which was originally released on October 19, 2016 as a single from the rapper's mixtape, Hibachi for Lunch. The song was later re-released on January 20, 2017 as the first single from 2 Chainz's fourth studio album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music.
  • This track was produced by long-term Kanye West collaborator Mike Dean.
  • Other notable songs where 2 Chainz and Gucci Mane have worked together before include Gucci Mane's "Okay With Me," Usher's "No Limit (G-Mix)," and Kanye West's "Champions."
  • The song title refers to Purple Drank, which is a slang term for a concoction that contains stripe or fruit juice mixed with prescription-strength cough syrup, thus making it a recreational drug. The purple-ish hue of Purple Drank comes from the dyes in the cough syrup mixture. Houston producer DJ Screw first popularized the beverage, which became popular in the hip hop community in the southern US in the 1990s.
  • The mainly black-and-white Prohibition-era inspired video features all three rappers. The wooden crates of purple drank are the only objects seen in color throughout the clip. The visual was directed by Howard Ross, who shot several previous 2 Chainz videos including "Ounces Back" and "Bounce" with Lil Wayne. It was filmed at 2 Chainz's Atlanta tapas bar Escobar, which opened in early December 2016.

"I just really wanted to put something in that time and place," Ross explained to Genius. "I actually had a prohibition idea for another song but… I was like 'Oh it makes perfect sense for 'Good Drank.'" There's no direct connection between the song and the prohibition era, but Howard said 2 Chainz liked the idea of "[taking] prohibition, modernizing it by getting rid of the alcohol and replacing it with purple drank."
