Songfacts®:

  • Here, 24kGoldn is joined by Puerto Rican American rapper Iann Dior. The two reflect on their toxic relationships and detail their feelings about their moody and manipulative girlfriends.
  • The pair first worked together in 2019 when 24kGoldn co-wrote Iann Dior's first RIAA Gold single, "Gone Girl."
  • Shortly after its release on July 24, 2020, the song began to garner attention on the video-sharing app TikTok, becoming 24Goldn's second chart success after "City Of Angels."
  • The summery pop-tinged beat was created by:

Blake Slatkin, who also co-produced Juice WRLD's "Bad Energy" with Take a Daytrip.

KBeaZy, who has worked with Roddy Ricch ("Feed Tha Streets 2") and Kehlani ("Toxic"). He previously hooked up with Iann Dior when he produced his single "Prospect."

Omer Fedi, who also co-produced "City of Angels." His other credits include Kid Laroi's "Go!."
  • The song was an off-the-cuff creation when 24KGoldn, Iann Dior, Omer and KBeazy were playing Call of Duty. The two producers were more interested in making a beat than playing video games and Goldn started singing along to their instrumentation, coming up with what became the hook. Iann Dior darted to the studio and laid down his verse and 24kGoldn followed him. "It's really crazy, because I wasn't even trying to make music that day," 24KGoldn told Complex.
  • Omer Fedi told MTV News how he and KBeaZy spontaneously started making beats while Goldn and Dior played Call of Duty. "I didn't even have my guitars, so I took Iann's guitar, plugged it into the computer, and the first thing I played was the 'Mood' guitar riff," he recalled.

After Fedi and KBeaZy laid down the beat, Goldn, still playing Call of Duty, started singing, "Why you always in a mood?"

"He probably didn't even know he was singing because he was so focused on the game," said Fedi.

The producer immediately recognized the potential in Goldn's ad-libbing and pleaded with him to get off the couch and record his subconscious hook.
  • "Mood" climbed to #1 on the Hot 100 dated October 23, 2020. The song proved its multi-genre appeal by becoming the first single to simultaneously top the Hot 100, Hot Rock and Alternative Songs, Hot Alternative Songs, and Hot Rap Songs tallies.
  • 24kGoldn and Iann Dior dropped a remix featuring verses by Justin Bieber and J Balvin that are full of one-liners. It marks the Biebs and J Balvin's second official collaboration following the "Latino remix" of the Canadian pop star's "Sorry" single.
