During recording sessions for This Is War, 30 Seconds to Mars hosted a gathering, which they called "The Summit" at the Avalon club in Los Angeles. The purpose of this was so that fans could see how far into recording the band was, and maybe even participate in it. Lead guitarist Tomo explained to Music Radar how the gathering contributed to this track: "This is a love letter to the fans. You can really hear our fans from The Summit singing and stomping and clapping. What you think are drums are really the percussive sounds they're making. The chorus, in fact, is practically all made up of what came from The Summit. I love it."
Tomo told Music Radar: "Personally, it was a great song to play the guitar to. It's fun and energetic and uplifting. And it was another track where we tried to challenge ourselves with the guitar sound, going from something that was very processed to a very raw, organic kind of vibe. I used a vintage Fender Jazzmaster on it - it's Jared's guitar, actually - and it was the perfect choice."
The song title is a Latin phrase that literally means "voice of the people."

Ignatius from Saint Nazianz, WiThis is one of my favorite songs of all time. I spent some time in Juneau, Alaska back in 2015 during a period of tremendous transformation in my life. This song always makes me think of that time in Alaska especially the part, "darkness falls, here comes the rain... Far far away in a land that time can't change." If this song doesn't elicit some emotional impact when you listen to it, you should check your pulse.
