Songfacts®:

  • This song was inspired by the four-week-old son of 4Him vocalist Mark Harris. He recalled in CCM Magazine presents 100 Greatest Songs In Christian Music that he was wondering how to communicate the Christian message to his newborn, who hadn't quite caught on to this thing called language. Suddenly it clicked that the message was bigger than words. Harris explained: "I thought it's really how I live and if I live what I say. The simple message in this song is that we cannot compromise because kids are looking at us, and what they see in us basically gives them a foundation for the way that they live their lives." He added: "We all need to continue to be a light for the kids that come behind us - for future generations."
  • This won the 1994 CCM Magazine Reader's Choice for Song of the Year.
