Songfacts®:

  • 5 Seconds of Summer ponder here what girls actually say when they talk boys with their girlfriends. The song was recorded for the soundtrack of the 2016 American supernatural comedy film Ghostbusters.
  • The track was written by John Ryan, Teddy Geiger, Ammar Malik, and Eric Frederic, while the production was handled by Ricky Reed (Meghan Trainor, Twenty One Pilots). "The idea for the song came together in a jam session with me and a couple of other songwriters out in Palm Springs about a year and a half ago: myself, a writer named John Ryan, another writer named Teddy Geiger" - yes, that Teddy Geiger - "and another writer named Ammar Malik," he recalled to Billboard magazine. "Four of us drunk and jamming on things that felt like early '80s dance punk, like the kind of downtown sound. We fell into what felt like a fun, silly, weird idea."
  • According to Reed, when the 5SOS guys heard the demo in Reed's studio at Echo Park in LA, they "freaked out" and recorded the vocals. He added; "We had a great time working out the parts."
  • The video cuts between the guys fighting ghosts to clips from the movie. The band members embody the four Ghostbusters by wearing costumes from the film with Luke Hemmings as Leslie Jones' Patty Tolan, Ashton Irwin as Kate McKinnon's Jillian Holtzmann, Michael Clifford as Melissa McCarthy's Abby Yates and Calum Hood as Kristen Wiig's Erin Gilbert.
  • This finds 5SOS adopting a different sound. "It's more of a groove-type of song," revealed drummer/singer Ashton Irwin to Kerrang!. "It's reminiscent of Miss You by The Rolling Stones and stuff like that, or even Talking Heads! That's an exciting sound to us, and we're ready to progress a little more. We wanna find something exciting that's a mix that maybe will become our type of sound. That we're identified for."

"On our first couple of EPs people used to say to me, 'Oh, you guys just remind me of American Pie.' (laughs) and I find that really funny. So it's nice to progress from there – we started somewhere and we're going to a different place. It's kind of an older sound and it's a bit funky too, which is fun."
