Songfacts®:

  • Here, 5 Seconds of Summer's Luke Hemmings is addressing his younger self. In the band's early days, people who thought they knew better were trying to control him. However, Hemmings refused to compromise and insisted on being his own man, something he's grateful for now.

Shout out to the old me and everything he showed me
Glad you didn't listen when the world was trying to slow me

Though he made a ton of mistakes, Hemmings has no regrets.

I would do it over now, I'd do it over

The singer has grown from all his blunders and slip-ups, which have made him the person he is today.
  • Said Hemmings, "Old Me carries a youthful spirit and follows the narrative of a young person's life growing up, for better or for worse. Every decision we made, whether right or wrong, has led us to the men we are proud to be today. We were thrown into the public eye at a young age and gratefully had each other at a confusing time. Sometimes it's important we look back in order to appreciate the journey we've been on together."
  • Luke Hemmings and 5SOS drummer Ashton Irwin wrote this thoughtful reflection on growth with:

Canadian singer-songwriter Billy Walsh and producer Louis Bell, who are Post Malone's go-to songwriting partners.

Regular 5SOS collaborators Ali Tamposi and Andrew Watt, who co-penned the band's previous two singles "Easier," "Teeth" and "No Shame."

Korean-American producer Brian Lee (Fifth Harmony's "Work from Home," Camila Cabello's "Havana").

Hip-hop songwriter Dre Moon (Beyonce's "Drunk In Love," The Weeknd's "Heartless").

Louis Bell, Dre Moon and Andrew Watt produced the song.
  • The song's music video finds the band taking a trip down memory lane while riding on a train through their native Australia.

The clip recreates moments throughout 5 Seconds of Summer's career and includes home footage from their early beginnings. The final shot shows the band walking stepping on stage at the Fire Fight Australia benefit concert for National Bushfire Relief.

Hannah Lux Davis (Ariana Grande, Halsey) directed the visual after helming their "No Shame" clip the previous month.
