Songfacts®:

  • 5 Seconds of Summer's attempt at writing the perfect Valentine's Day song, this finds the band looking to capture the romantic feelings they have when they're with their loved ones. Drummer Ashton Irwin explained on the band's Cocktail Chats video (episode 2):

"Lyrically, it's about a lazy love that feels free. It's a love that meets in the middle and there's no expectations."
  • Throw balloons, teddy bears and the chocolate eclairs away
Got nothing but love for you, fall more in love every day
    Valentine, valentine

Vocalist Luke Hemmings said that the idea of the chorus is "that Valentine's Day should be every day."
  • 5 Seconds of Summer first performed the song live at the iHeartRadio Music Awards Fan Army Celebration on March 10, 2018.
  • Ashton Irwin directed the song's music video alongside photographer Andy DeLuca. He explained the clip's dark, androgynous aesthetic.

"There are a few things we wanted to capture; the androgyny and the feminine element of the way Luke performs as well as the dark romance of the song. This video is us taking something into our own hands and attempting to be a part of every single detail of what we create."
