Songfacts®:

  • Cotton candy may be sweet, but the Tootsee Roll will get butts on the dance floor. This song provides step-by-step instructions on how to do the dance. As long as you follow along, you'll get it - it's just slides and dips, booty shaking optional.
  • "Tootsie Roll," as in the candy, is a trademark of Tootsie Roll Industries. This song is the "Tootsee Roll," spelled differently.
  • Climbing to #8 on the Hot 100, this is one of the biggest hits with the Miami bass sound, which used drum machines to create big, mushy, highly danceable beats. It started in Miami in the '80s but was refined in Atlanta and Jacksonville in the early '90s. 69 Boyz shared members with two other Jacksonville groups: 95 South and Quad City DJ's.

Around this time (1994), there was a big whoop over which came first, the 95 South track "Whoot! There It Is" or the Atlanta version, "Whoomp! There It Is" by Tag Team. They were still whooping it up in "Tootsee Roll," with the bridge, "I feel a whoop comin' on..."
  • 69 Boyz had a few more hits; "Kitty-Kitty" went to #51 in 1995, "Hoop N Yo Face" to #95 in 1996, and "Woof Woof" to #31 in 1998 (used on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack).
