Songfacts®:

  • 6ix9ine is Daniel Hernandez a Bushwick, Brooklyn metal scream rapper who blew into the mainstream with the release of this song.
  • The song gets its title from the 1997 American dystopian art film Gummo that follows the strange and destructive ways that several young inhabitants of a small, poor Midwestern American town get up to in order to pass time. It was the directorial debut of cult movie maker Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers, Kids).
  • The track was produced by Pi'erre Bourne, who first rose to fame as the beatmaker for Playboi Carti's breakout hit "Magnolia."
  • The song's success was in spite of allegations that Hernandez had indulged in sexual relations with a minor. As a result, many of the rapper's previous collaborators have distanced themselves from him including Bourne, who stated that he actually made the beat for Canton, Ohio rapper Trippie Redd, who then passed it on to 6ix9ine.
  • 6ix9ine's production and engineering collaborator Wizard told Rolling Stone that the two spent nearly a third of a year poring over this song's lyrical content about the thrills of armed robbery.

"We worked on 'Gummo' for almost four months," he said. "We tried a bunch of different flows, a bunch of cadences. The label didn't believe in it, but we just knew when we heard it."
