Songfacts®:

  • Although it doesn't sound like it, "M.I.A." is a tribute song; with lyrics by Selene Vigil and music by this all-girl punk band, it was written for Mia Zapata, lead vocalist of another Seattle punk band, The Gits.

Zapata joined the 27 Club in the small hours of July 7, 1993 when she was raped and strangled by Jesus Mezquia. She fought her attacker fiercely, and was also badly beaten. Ironically, Zapata had herself written a tribute song for 7 Year Bitch lead guitarist Stefanie Sargent, who died from a heroine overdose aged just 24 in July the previous year.

"M.I.A." appears on the soundtrack of the 2005 documentary The Gits. >>>
