Songfacts®:

  • Producer Bud'da recorded this track as a rhythmic digital samba with Latin percussion while California trumpeter Ronnie Blake's horns were recorded live. Bud'da recalled to Fuse TV: "Since I gave it a Latin feel, I decided to add the horns to go with it as an accent."

"Another thing I had done that I hadn't heard before was adding certain stutters and echoes [to Aaliyah's voice]," he added. "There weren't too many people doing it back then. Initially I had a longer version with more cool stuff, but for the sake of radio we decided to chop it down some."
  • Hope you ain't makin' plans on runnin' me
Cause I read between the lines

Aaliyah is warning her guy who thinks he's pulling one over on her that he's onto him as she's read between the lines. The phrase "read between the lines" means to draw conclusions from information that is hidden or implied. One method of cryptography is to write so that the hidden message is revealed only when alternative lines are read.
