Songfacts®:

  • In this single from her debut EP, Abbey Cone drops some truth on a conceited guy who's used to getting his own way as a big fish in a small pond: "You're only king of the world 'cause your world is so damn small."

"This song is the less romantic side of the small-town boy story," the country singer explained in a Songfacts track by track. "It's the story of the insecure ones, the ones who can't handle a girl destined for more than her hometown. The ones who think they're king of the world, but unfortunately have never experienced more than a few square miles of it."
  • Cone wrote this with Nashville songwriters Pete Good and AJ Babcock, the team behind Jason Michael Carroll's 2013 single "Close Enough." Babcock is also known as the original bassist in the alt-rock band House of Heroes.
  • In the bridge, Cone sings, "So ride that horse, right on back to Texas, where everything is just the way you left it." Cone grew up in Argyle, a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas.
  • Cone had to summon some courage to shoot the music video, which finds her hanging out with a horse. "Fun fact: I'm actually terrified of horses," she confessed on Twitter, "so making the KOTW video was quite terrifying at times. The horse I'm riding is Bill, luckily he was sweet and very patient with me."
