  • Birth and the Burial is the debut album from Act of Defiance, a heavy metal supergroup formed in 2014 by by ex Scar the Martyr vocalist Henry Derek Bonner, former Megadeth members Chris Broderick (guitar) and Shawn Drover (drums), and Shadows Fall bassist Matt Bachand. Thematically, the band explore their own personal experiences on the record. Chris Broderick explained that this song, "is about a person who is constantly casting out negativity and betrayal and trying to deceive those around him, but we hope that fans will take these lyrics and put their own personal meaning to them."

    He added, "You never want to make them so specific to any particular situation, and I think a lot of these experiences are really relatable."
