Songfacts®:

  • This song is about British rock 'n' roller Brian Holden (1939-91) who took the stage name Vince Taylor and was popular in France in the early '60s. A larger-than-life character, Holden took the "rock star" persona to the extreme and was a direct inspiration for Ziggy Stardust. "He was this underground character who once OD'ed on acid in the Sixties, "explained Adam to The Sun, "and went on stage one night and proclaimed he was Jesus. A tragic, absolutely fascinating character and a good source for a song."
  • Adam penned the song with Morrissey's guitarist and writing partner Boz Boorer, with the idea coming from a chain an ex-girlfriend gave Adam. "It was a beaten-up gold chain I used to wear around my wrist during the punk days," he explained.

  • Dale from Dayton, OhioCatchy song about an interesting character, Vince Taylor, who wrote the song "Brand New Cadillac", covered by Rory Storm and the Hurricanes (with Ringo Starr before he joined the Beatles) and The Clash. Many consider Taylor, who spent part of his youth in the USA, as a progenitor of British Punk Rock.
