Songfacts®:

  • This song is about British rock 'n' roller Brian Holden (1939-91) who took the stage name Vince Taylor and was popular in France in the early '60s. A larger-than-life character, Holden took the "rock star" persona to the extreme and was a direct inspiration for Ziggy Stardust. "He was this underground character who once OD'ed on acid in the Sixties, "explained Adam to The Sun, "and went on stage one night and proclaimed he was Jesus. A tragic, absolutely fascinating character and a good source for a song."
  • Adam penned the song with Morrissey's guitarist and writing partner Boz Boorer, with the idea coming from a chain an ex-girlfriend gave Adam. "It was a beaten-up gold chain I used to wear around my wrist during the punk days," he explained.
