Songfacts®:

  • Not to be confused with any later song of the same name, this is almost certainly the first song ever to have been written or recorded about the medium, as it was performed live on November 2, 1936 by Adele Dixon at Alexandra Palace accompanied by the BBC Television Orchestra conducted by Hyam Greenbaum on the first ever entertainment programme, Variety on the first day the BBC broadcast to the nation and the world.

It has lyrics by James Dyrenforth and music by Kenneth Leslie-Smith. Adele Dixon (1908-92) was a comedy actress, and the passage of time has indeed rendered both this song and her performance of it funny in the extreme. >>>
