Songfacts®:

  • It happens to just about all of us: we work really hard for something, and then when we get it, we don't want it. Musicians often learn this lesson when they strive for fame, only to find it's far less enjoyable than they hoped (Charlotte Caffey from the Go-Go's told us this). This song advises us to stop striving and take some time to think about what we really want in life.
  • New Wave was released on Sire Records and marked the major-label debut for Against Me!, who had been performing since 1997. What was it like going to a big record company? In our 2010 interview with lead singer Tom Gabel, he said, "In my experiences the differences between major and indie labels are few, with the biggest difference being size, the amount of people who work there and that some do certain things better than others, and some have cooler people who work for them. When it comes down to it their functions are the same, they both exist to sell records. I'm thankful for all of the support that Sire has given us in making the records we have with them."
