Songfacts®:

  • Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace wrote this song for her daughter, Evelyn, who was born in 2009. "It's about mortality," she told NME. "And realizing that all the things in your life are temporary."
  • Laura Jane Grace expanded on the song to Kerrang!: "When you have a kid, all the clichés are true. It changes you. Your perspective changes immediately, and time starts to move in a different way. You have these moments of realisation about who you are, where you are in your life, your age in comparison to your parents... It's a real head trip."

"Having a kid of my own way, please see things from so many different angles, and going through having my daughter (Evelyn) while accepting gender dysphoria and dealing with it, it really take me a sense of my own mortality. It may be realise that death is real, and obviously all of us are going to confront it in our own time. It's part of life that I'm going to die someday and my daughter is going to die some day, and I hope I die before my daughter."
  • The black-and-white animated video starkly visualizes the song's themes. The clip was directed by the Verona, Italy-based animator Margherita Ballarin.
