Songfacts®:

  • There is only one known hand-colored print of Georges Méliès' legendary silent film, Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip To The Moon). It was rediscovered in 1993 by the Filmoteca de Catalunya but was in a state of almost total decomposition. After it was eventually restored at the Technicolor Lab of Los Angeles, the French electronic duo Air was commissioned to write a new soundtrack for its premiere at the 2011 Cannes film festival. Despite Méliès' film only having a runtime of 14 minutes, Air still produced enough music to fill an entire album, which was released as their seventh LP on February 7, 2012. Said Air's Nicolas Godin of the album: "[It is] undoubtedly more organic than most of our past projects. We wanted it to sound 'handmade and knocked together', a bit like Méliès' special effects. Everything is played live and like Méliès' film, our soundtrack is nourished by living art."
  • This lunar-bound cut is the first single from the set. It features dusky vocals from Dream-Pop duo Beach House's Victoria Legrand, who is the niece of French film composer Michel Legrand.
  • Air have tackled space themes previously - their debut album was titled Moon Safari whilst the second single released from the set was "Kelly Watch the Stars!" The French duo also named their 2004 EP, Surfing On a Rocket.
  • The Le Voyage Dans La Lune movie was also a notable inspiration on Smashing Pumpkins video for "Tonight, Tonight." The visual, which won six MTV Music Video Awards, was filmed in the style of a early 20th century silent film using theater-style backdrops and primitive special effects.
