  • In this song, AJ Smith is disillusioned with the empty interactions on the ladder to fame, where you're a "nobody" until you've made it big.

"'Nobody' is about not wanting to leave anything unsaid, not wanting to 'die nobody,' but also staying true to self," Smith told Songfacts. "It's a reminder that I'm already 'somebody' to the important people in my life, so stay grounded, stay focused, and stay real."
  • For an up-and-coming singer-songwriter like AJ Smith, social media is a valuable currency, but playing that game can be draining. "'Do you follow back? I got you!' I hear this ALL the time," he says. "A while ago, I went to an industry event in LA (and, honestly, I've been to so many like this recently, you could insert location here) where people were asking for my Instagram username before they'd ask for my name or would ask where I was from or really try to get to know me as a person. I was so caught off-guard by this behavior, yet found myself getting sucked into it as well, and I didn't like it. So I wrote this song about that sensation.

We're in this bizarre age where social media has shone the spotlight on 'what can you do for me' interactions in such a glaring manner, but also where we've convinced ourselves that everything we do has to be of value to others and it's so easy to fall into traps of clout-chasing when pursuing grand ambitions."
  • The music video is set in the Victorian era, in stark contrast to the hyperconnected world of social media. Smith told Songfacts how it came together: "When it came time to shoot the music video, I'd just finished binge watching all of Bridgerton, and simultaneously I had read an article comparing income inequality today with that of the French Revolution era and with all of these thoughts in my head, including considering the great tragedy of art often being minimized and only called 'content' by many, I saw an opportunity to tell the story of this song through the lens of a loose regency-era lens.

My visions are always far grander than my budget, but thanks to the generosity of time that my friends were willing to give, we were able to make it work! I rented a house, my fiancee (Brianna Abruzzo) choreographed a dance, we learned some basic stunts (I dare not say more and ruin the suspense), and we shot what turned out to be a beautiful video that I am so proud to add to a body of recent work. Huge shout-out to the incredible video production team, led by director Whitney Wolanin and director of photography Jack Sheahan. I hope you have as much fun watching the video as we did making it!"
