Songfacts®:

  • This is an autobiographical song inspired by the love of Al's life at that point, Mandi. He met her in early 1967 when he played the Central School of Speech and Drama. Although he would soon break into the folk scene in a big way, times were hard for him then, and this is reflected in the song. Mandi inspires or appears in several of his other songs, including "Manuscript," "The News From Spain," "Elvaston Place", and the last song he wrote about her after their relationship was long over, "Where Are They Now?" >>>
