  • Phoenix, Arizona native Alec Benjamin first came to attention when he released his debut mixtape, Narrated for You, in 2018. Benjamin soon began to garner support from other musicians, including one of his biggest inspirations, John Mayer, who invited him onto his Instagram Live TV show Current Mood, where the two performed some of the young singer's songs.
  • This song, the lead single from Narrated For You, was influenced by Benjanin's first relationship. He told Billboard they'd reached a stage in their romance when he still cared for his lover, but felt like he was at her mercy. "They kind of hold all the cards and it was kind of like a helpless feeling," Benjamin stated. "So it's about asking for somebody to be gracious if they're gonna leave."
  • A new duet version of the song featuring Alessia Cara was debuted on January 7, 2019. The collaboration came about when Cara tweeted that she liked the song. Benjamin sent her his phone number and asked her if she wanted to do a verse. A couple of days later, Cara sent him a voice memo that she'd recorded at home.

Benjamin told Billboard: "She added a lot of really cool harmonies, and her perspective brought new meaning to the song."
  • Alec Benjamin released two videos for the song. The clip for his solo version chronicles a couple's struggle to pay their bills. The visual for his duet remix with Alessia Cara, which was directed by Jared Hogan, concentrates more on relationships.

"We really wanted to keep the overall vision simple but also capture the themes of the song through various relationships," Benjamin told Complex UK of the latter promo.

  • Your Mom from Not Tellingso I think the song was about his love life and the woman in the song that he is talking about died and he is upset and he didn't get to say goodbye to his loved one and he made a song about it.
  • Emmy JhayFor me in this song he isn't begging his lover to stay
He is only appealing to the person to "let him down slowly"
  • E from Yeah NoI think the meaning of this is a high-school relationship. I got this idea from where he says "As I'm walking down the corridor" I think the person he is in a relationship with is not who he thought they were. They're probably cold and don't care whether or not they hurt him.
