Songfacts®:

  • Composer Howard Blake revealed on the Classic FM radio station that the inspiration for this song came when he was walking along a Cornish beach. The phrase "walking in the air" came into his head and as soon as he got home he penned this tune around those words.
  • This featured in the 1982 animated film The Snowman, which was based on the Raymond Briggs book of the same name. In the movie, which has become a perennial Christmas favorite on British television, English choirboy Peter Autey sings this song. However Welsh choirboy Aled Jones recorded the vocals on its subsequent single release.
