Songfacts®:

  • Alexis Babini is a singer/songwriter from Boston who cites Billy Joel and Wilco as an influence. He told us: "This is a song I wrote as sort of a sequel to another song of mine called 'Easy on the Eyes.' 'Easy' is about admiring somebody from afar but never getting the chance to really tell them how you feel. 'Caroline' is about finally getting that chance and knowing that they're either going to date you or leave you in a cloud of dust. My favorite memory from recording this song was composing the harmonizing guitar lines and being able to say the word 'Guitarmony' a lot in the studio. Also, girls named Caroline love this song."
  • Explaining his songwriting process, Babini says: "I take a lot of different approaches. I leave myself messages on my answering machine and also sometimes will just sit and write words to see what develops. Some songwriters believe lyrics should start somewhere and, with each verse, develop to a conclusion. For me, I try and take that approach not just lyrically but also musically. I usually write very late in the evening when everyone else sleeping. One time I had my apartment window open and I heard someone yell, 'Can it Elvis! It's 3 AM!'"
