Songfacts®:

  • Alexis Babini is a singer/songwriter from Boston who is known for his playful stage shows. He told Songfacts: "This is probably the most personal song on my album. I think every songwriter wants a 'Carpe Diem' song in his or her songbook. This one is about taking a breath and letting go of everything that's holding you back. For me that was pursuing a career in music. It's about having unapologetic confidence in the face of people saying I'd never make a career as a performing songwriter. Another fun thing about this song is that when I sing the words 'like a broken record, a skipping song' the drums do a subtle thing that sort of skips a beat. That was Ed Valauskas' idea, who produced most of the songs on Breaking It In." (Alexis' website is alexisbabini.com)
