Songfacts®:

  • Here, Ali Gatie finds himself reminiscing about a past relationship where he never shared his true feelings. Now that the girl has moved on with a new boyfriend, he wonders if she ever loved him.

What if I told you that I need you?
Would you tell me that you need me, yeah?
If I'd tell you all my feelings
    Would you believe me, yeah?

Gatie told Rolling Stone the song's inspiration came from the common dilemma where a person is unsure if they should tell their romantic interest how they feel, or keep it to themselves. "Most of the time you regret not saying how you feel," he added.
  • Ali Gatie wrote the song with:

Frequent The Weeknd collaborator DannyBoyStyles, who won a Grammy for his production work on the Toronto native's Beauty Behind the Madness album. He also co-produced Beyonce's "6 Inch."

Sam Wish, who worked with Gatie on the singer's debut EP, You, including his breakthrough single "It's You."

DannyBoyStyles and Sam Wish also produced the track.
  • Gatie started teasing snippets of the song in November 2019. When users of the video app TikTok began messaging the chorus' questions to their love interest, the snippets went viral, even before the release of the full song on January 23, 2020.
