Songfacts®:

  • "So Far Under" is about that awful feeling when you find yourself outnumbered, surrounded and completely up against it and there seems little chance you can do anything about it. The lyrics were written by Alice In Chains' co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist William DuVall, and were inspired by personal circumstances, as well as events in the wider world. However, DuVall explained the song is not as defeatist as it may seem on first impressions.

"The lyric is a cold, hard assessment of a difficult situation but the music has a message all its own," he said. "There's still room to flip the script."
  • DuVall also performs the guitar solo, which along with the rest of the song was recorded at Studio X in Seattle with further overdubs done at producer Nick Raskulinecz's studio in rural Tennessee.
