Songfacts®:

  • Alicia Keys told Ebony magazine November 2007 about this song: "One of the other songs is called 'That's The Thing About Love.' And that one came right after I got back from Egypt. It talks about love in very grand ways: between family, between lovers, between friends. That it will blind you, sneak up behind you, try to take what you got, try to forsake you. It will hurt you, but of course try it!"
  • Alicia Keys co-wrote and co-produced this with Linda Perry, one of three tracks on the album the songwriter was involved with, the other two being "Superwoman" and "Sure Looks Good To Me." Among the hit records Perry has written are "What's Up" for her then group, 4 Non Blondes, "Beautiful" for Christina Aguilera and "Get The Party Started" for Pink.

In an interview with BET.com, Alicia Keys described what it was like working with Perry: "She's somebody that I've wanted to work with for a while. We kind of flirted with the idea and this time it finally came together. It was a phenomenal experience. She's obviously of one world and I'm kind of from another world and you put us together in one room but our foundations are the same. We both are musicians, we both play, we both produce we both write, we both are kind of strong, visionary women. So you put us together in one room it's like - crazy! I don't know what happened in that room! It was scary, the things that happened. It just knocked me off my feet. It was really a great experience."
