Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track from Chicago-based punk band Alkaline Trio's seventh studio album. Singer and guitarist Matt Skiba told Punknews.org the title is a metaphor about dependency. "Like, drug addiction or alcohol addiction isn't too different from being addicted to love." He added: "It's a metaphor that's been used before and this is our take on it. I think for some people, love is a drug. If you listen to the lyrics in the song 'This Addiction,' it's about trying to kick this thing you can't seem to get away from. There are references to heroin and methadone - to kicking that and staying clean."
  • At one time Alkaline Trio were going to name the album, "Might As Well Face It You're Addicted to Drugs," referring to the Robert Palmer 80s hit, but Skiba explained, "that didn't go over too well with the higher-ups. (laughs) They were like, 'Yeah, not so much. Target might not want to carry that.'"
