Songfacts®:

  • This song is about sharing things openly, both good and bad.

Show me where it hurts and give me something real
And lead me to the part of you that never really heals
And say the words that burn when they leave your mouth
Tell me your story, but don't leave the good parts out

Andy Grammer told Pop Crush the lyrics are "about sharing your true story with people and really wanting to get to the place where you could honestly share those unfiltered parts."
  • Grammer explained to Billboard why he titled his third album after this song:

"If someone does a memoir, there's a piece of the memoir that everybody really wants to hear about – the good parts, that's what we want. I want you to tell me what it is to be alive as you.

The translation from your heart to the recording usually loses a lot – [it's like] an emotional telephone game, so when you hear it back it's like 'That's not quite right.' But then there are times, especially a line like 'Tell me your story but don't leave the good parts out' for me, I knew that that carried even more than I initially felt. Once that line came out of my mouth, I was like 'Oh man, that's one of my favorite lines I've ever written.' I remember calling my manager saying 'think we have a title.'"
  • The album reflects the fact that there are good and bad things happening in Grammer's life. "There's a lot of honest, brutal things in there," he told ABC Radio. "If you were sitting down with me...and we hadn't talked in a while, and you go, 'Dude, just give me the Cliff Notes...of what's going on in your life: the best, the worst, the good parts of your story,' I'd be like, 'Here it is. Here's 13 songs that describe everything that is the most important to me right now.'"
