• "The Murder Of Liddle Towers" was the debut single of punk band Angelic Upstarts. A loud, angry song about police brutality, it was released in 1978 on the Dead Records label and then re-released on Rough Trade/Small Wonder Records. The B-side, "Police Oppression," is more of the same, although from a general rather than a specific viewpoint.
  
  In October 2001, Mojo magazine included "The Murder Of Liddle Towers" in its list of the best punk rock singles of all time. Unlike not a few punk musicians, these guys can really play their instruments, and grisly subject matter aside, the song has a nice guitar sound. The lyrics were written by vocalist Mensi and the music was composed - yes, one may use that word - by lead guitarist Mond. Decca played the drums and Steve played the bass. Or to give them their real names Thomas Mensforth, Ray Cowie, Derek Wade and Steve Forsten.
• Liddle Towers was a 39-year-old man from Gateshead, England, who died in 1976 a few weeks after he was beaten by police outside of a nightclub. His case drew attention to the problem of police brutality in England. >>>
