Songfacts®:

  • Anne-Marie is a highly sensitive individual and on "Machine" she expresses her wish that she could become a robot so she wouldn't have to deal with her emotions.

    If I was a machine
    I wouldn't be affected
By violence on the television screen

A week after the November 2015 Paris terrorist attacks, Anne-Marie was due to play the venue with the dance act Rudimental. The news of the atrocity completely threw her. "It really just f---ed me up," she told The Guardian. "I was in bed for three days and I could tell I was dealing with it differently to everyone else."

For a period Anne-Marie thought she had bipolar disorder because of the strong effect her emotions had on her but during a visit to a therapist it was explained to her she was an empath.
  • Anne-Marie told Billboard she's particularly proud of this track.

"I feel everyone's feelings," she explained. "That song is about wishing sometimes I was a machine and not getting affected by all this stuff I'm seeing in the world, because it does f--k me up. When I see people sad, I'm sad."
