Songfacts®:

  • Here, Anne-Marie has had it with her cheating man. While she's busy earning the money to pay the bills, he's playing the field. But when she confronts her fella about the doing the dirty on her, he denies everything.

The endless messages on his phone are from a platonic friend and those are bruises, not love bites. In retaliation, the guy plays on Anne-Marie's insecurities, accusing her of being a crazy psycho for not trusting him. She's the problem – not him.
  • Anne-Marie wrote "Psycho" based on her own experiences with obnoxious boyfriends. "I've had that in so many relationships where I've come out of it thinking I'm the one was the problem, and again, until you finally learn about yourself that you're not the problem or you get with someone who treats you like you're not the problem, then you realize how wrong that was," she told BBC Radio 1's Clara Amfo. "So this song is about that. And it's like finally, standing up to someone who's made you feel like you're the problem when it's actually them."
  • Aitch contributes some of his customary cheeky-chappy rhymes to the revengeful anthem. Anne-Marie's collaboration with the Mancunian rapper came about after she put a demo on TikTok and loads of people said it sounds like one of Aitch's songs. So she messaged him and he agreed to jump on the track.
  • During the chorus, Anne-Marie interpolates Lou Bega's "Mambo No 5 (A Little Bit Of)" when she names her cheating partner's side girls.

You met up with Veronica late last night
You had a bit of Elena on the side
Was chattin' up Anita all last week
And now you're doin' Nina, how'd you even meet her?
Hittin' on Bianca, are you dumb?
Got with Alexandra and her mum
  • Anne-Marie and Aitch wrote the song with:

Songwriter and producer Tom Mann. His other credits include Lewis Capaldi "One," Becky Hill's "Last Time" and Regard's "You."

Singer-songwriter Gracey. The Brighton native had her own hit in 2019 when she supplied the vocals for producer 220 Kid's song "Don't Need Love."

Songwriter Henry Tucker (Clean Bandit's "Drive," Jason DeRulo's "Acapulco").

The songwriting and producing duo Billen Ted, comprising Tom Hollings and Sam Brennan. The pair's other credits include Nathan Evans' 2021 chart-topping version of "Soon May The Wellerman Come" and KSI and Tom Grennan's "Not Over Yet."
  • Billen Ted and Mojam fashioned the dark and jerky piano production. Mojam, comprising Mustafa Omer and James Murray, previously teamed up with Anne-Marie for her "Don't Play" and "Kiss My (Uh-Oh)" singles. They also produced Aitch's "Buss Down" hit.
  • Anne-Marie intended to release "Psycho" on September 9, 2022, but she postponed it until September 16th because of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
