  • Lexington, Kentucky, native Anne Wilson's life changed in more ways than one when her older brother, Jacob, died in a car accident at 23. "It was so tragic," Wilson said in a Songfacts interview. "He was my best friend. That's actually how I started singing and how I got into music and that's why I wrote the song 'My Jesus.'"

Anne had never considered singing as a career until she performed Hillsong Worship's "What A Beautiful Name" at his funeral service. That was the first moment she felt God calling her to music.

When Wilson posted a video of herself singing "What A Beautiful Name" to YouTube, the clip reached Noble Management's Jason Davis. He spotted Wilson's potential and signed her as a management client in August 2018. He arranged a writing session with Jeff Sojka, who recommended her to Capitol Christian Music Group vice president Josh Bailey. Wilson signed a recording contract with Capitol CMG in 2019 and released this ballad as her launch single on April 16, 2021.
  • After losing her brother, Wilson processed her emotions through journal entries. As she flicked through her entries before a writing session with Matthew West and Jeff Pardo, the young singer had an idea for a song. "I walked through a really tough season of grief," she recalled to Billboard. "I remember having this moment where I wanted to give up on life. When I looked back at my journals, I saw how God pulled me through. I also realized I never referred to God as anything else, except 'My Jesus.'"

When she brought the title into the writing room, it turned out that the two others had that same exact title as an idea. None of the three had spoken about it, so it must have been "a total God thing."
  • The song finds Wilson telling the listener about "My Jesus," who carries our burdens, wipes away our tears, and saves us from our sins.
  • "My Jesus" climbed to #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart dated August. 14, 2021. It was the first debut single to top the tally since Cory Asbury's "Reckless Love" reached the summit in March 2018.
  • In her Songfacts interview, Wilson shared how the song touched a chord with people who were struggling with their faith after suffering a loss. "I've had a lot of really incredible responses to that song," she said.

"The ones that stand out are really stories of people saying they lost a loved one years ago, and that they turned away from the Lord and that they resented God. They were angry at Him, and when this song came out, they all of a sudden let go of their anger towards the Lord. I think there's something really hard about losing a loved one. I lost my brother in a car accident, and that's how that song came about. When you lose a loved one, you have to learn how to trust God. This song, 'My Jesus,' is encouraging people to do that. It's just a really powerful thing for me."
  • Holding its position for seven weeks, this was the longest-running #1 song of 2021 on the Billboard Christian Airplay chart.
  • At 19 years and 5 months, Anne Wilson became the youngest artist to top Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart.
  • "My Jesus" was named Christian Song of the Year at the 44th ASCAP Christian Music Awards. Co-writer Matthew West also took home the ASCAP Christian songwriter of the year prize for the fifth time. Besides "My Jesus," the award recognizes his songs:

"Look What You've Done," recorded by Tasha Layton.

"Scars In Heaven" recorded by Casting Crowns.

"Weary Traveler" recorded by Jordan St. Cyr.

"What If," recorded by Matthew West.
