Songfacts®:

  • Arcángel is an American rapper and singer-songwriter of Dominican heritage. Based in Puerto Rico, he performs reggaeton and Latin trap music. This song, released 15 years after his debut single, became his first Hot 100 hit.
  • "La Jumpa" is a collaboration with Bad Bunny. It's a braggadocious song where the rappers spit explicit rhymes about their bedroom activities. Because of their fame and wealth, it's easy for them to seduce women.
  • The song title comes from one of Bad Bunny's lines. Translated into English, it reads:

Your baby wants me to break it
    Luka, stepback, la jumpa

It's a double meaning that refers to Dallas Mavericks NBA player Luka Doncic's step-back jump shot, and the Puerto Rican slang word "jumpear," which means "charge the battery." ("Luka, step-back, I recharge her").
  • Arcángel's previous collaborations with Bad Bunny include the Billboard Hot Latin Songs Top 40 hits "Tu No Vive Así" (2016) and "Me Acostumbré" (2017). Both tracks were recorded with Mambo Kingz & DJ Luian.
  • Arcángel recorded "La Jumpa" for his trap album Señor Santos. Bad Bunny had come up with the idea for the song while on the road in Latin America with his World's Hottest Tour. Bunny sent him the song from Peru after Arcángel had completed the other tracks.

"Remember that he's on tour and it's very difficult for him to go to a music studio, so he had to send someone to look for a studio," Arcángel told Billboard. "He sent me the song, we recorded the same day, and three, four days passed in which we sent back and he listened."
  • Arcángel dedicated Señor Santos to the memory of his brother Justin, who died in 2021 in a car accident.
