Songfacts®:

  • "Black Lungs" finds Architects calling on humanity to examine the role we are playing in the destruction of our planet and fellow creatures. The title is a term associated with lung disease caused by the inhalation of metallic or mineral particles. The lyrics deal with the inevitable end of our world due to environmental pollution and climate change.
  • Jen Hardwick directed the post-apocalyptic video, which shows falling ash and embers surrounding the band members, highlighting the song's message.
  • Lead guitarist Josh Middleton came up with the riff while rehearsing for a Brighton warm-up gig in late 2018. He recalled to Kerrang: "I remember messing around while rehearsing for the Brighton show, putting an effect on my amp and writing that riff straight away. I still have the video of me doing it on my phone."
  • Architects released this as the second single from For Those That Wish to Exist. The self-produced album features 15 tracks that tackle what it means to exist while examining the role humans are playing in our planet's slow destruction.
  • For Those That Wish To Exist debuted at #1 on the UK albums chart. It was not only Architects' first chart-topper, but the band's first Top 10 album too; their previous peak was #15 for All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us in 2016.
