Songfacts®:

  • We usually equate "deep fake" with a technology that replaces a person's existing image with someone else's likeness. But here, drummer and lyricist Dan Searle is talking about our rulers' exploitation of the masses.

These tyrants will build an abyss
But the rest of us wish to exist

He also criticizes the masses' complacency in letting the powers that be control them and let our world go to ruin.

We see the cards and we go to fold
We play along but it soon grows old
  • Architects released "Deep Fake" as the third single from The Classic Symptoms Of A Broken Spirit. The crushing song was one of the first the band did for the album. Singer Sam Carter told BBC Radio 1's Clara Amfo that Searle is talking about what's going on in the world, and despite all the problems we "act like everything's OK and/or you can put like a fake face on everything."

Carter added that when you look around at everything going on, there's plenty to be scared about. "Whenever it comes to like waste going into our oceans or the fact that some kids don't know where their next meal is going to come from," he said. "Really we need to sort of have a look around and try and make a difference for sure."
  • Carter totally relates to the song's message, and it shows in his performance. "I love the song so much," he said. "I think it's important to show different elements of my voice for the song. But I think you know, in the breakdown when it really hits you can sort of hear the frustration and the anger there."
  • Dan Searle and guitarist Josh Middleton produced the track along with the rest of The Classic Symptoms Of A Broken Spirit album. Architects recorded the record at Deacon's Middle Farm Studios and their own HQ, Electric Studios in Brighton.
  • Jeb Hardwick directed the performance video, which features Architects playing the song in a darkened room with screens occasionally lighting it from behind. It is the sixth visual Hardwick has directed for the band, following the ones for "Downfall," "Hereafter," "Death Is Not Defeat," "Black Lungs," and "Meteor."
