Songfacts®:

  • Ariana Grande's most-recognizable visual trademark is her high ponytail. Here, she sings about being so comfortable with her man she lets him touch her famous hair.

    It's been way long overdue
Just like these inches down my back
Usually don't let people touch it
But tonight, you get a pass

Grande and her lover have reached the stage in their relationship where she feels relaxed enough to let him run his fingers through her prized ponytail.
  • Grande previously alluded to her signature ponytail in "7 Rings," where she sings:

You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it
I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it
  • Ariana Grande writes and creates her songs from her own experiences, and many of the songs on Positions are about her love for her boyfriend Dalton Gomez. She started dating the real estate agent in early 2020; the record seems to cover their relationship from her fears at the beginning on "Motive" and "Safety Net," to loosening up on this song, and her hopes for their future on "West Side."
  • Ariana Grande wrote this song with her two go-to songwriting partners: Tayla Parx, who co-penned five songs on Positions, and Victoria Monét, who is on six tracks.
  • The slinky power ballad has a slightly jazzy feel. The producers responsible are:

Grande's regular producer Tommy "TBHits" Brown, who worked on every Positions track.

Scott Storch, who was one of the top producers in the early 2000s, helming hit records for the likes of Chris Brown ("Run It!") and Beyoncé ("Baby Boy"). This is his first production for Grande.

Charles "Scootie" Anderson, who along with Michael "Mikey" Foster comprises the Pittsburgh pop duo Social House. The pair worked on three Thank U Next songs, including "7 Rings" and the title track. Social House also collaborated with Grande for their own hit single, "Boyfriend."

Anthony M. Jones, who also hails from Pittsburgh. He has worked with such artists as Justin Bieber ("Holy") and Fifth Harmony ("Bridges"). Jones also collaborated with Social House and Grande on "Boyfriend."
