Songfacts®:

  • Ariana Grande recorded her Thank U Later album in the midst of several personal blows. As well as being in recovery mode from post-traumatic stress disorder following the Manchester Arena bombings, the singer also had to deal with the death of her former boyfriend Mac Miller and the end of her engagement to comedian Pete Davidson. This confessional R&B ballad is one of several songs on the record where she focuses primarily on dealing with personal baggage.

Sorry if I'm up and down a lot (Yeah)
Sorry that I think I'm not enough
And sorry if I say sorry way too much
You can go ahead and call me selfish (Selfish)
But after all this damage, I can't help it (Help it)
But what you can trust is I need your touch

Grande is feeling especially vulnerable following her recent emotional roller coaster, and needs some codependent love.
  • Grande previewed "Needy" at the beginning of the writing and recording process of Thank U Next in a 45-second long snippet on October 4, 2018.
  • Grande wrote the song with:

Songwriting partners Victoria Monet and Tayla Parx, who were two of the friends that she bought matching rings for in the song "7 Rings."

Los Angeles-based producer Tommy "TBHits" Brown, who has worked with Grande since her 2013 debut, Yours Truly.
