Songfacts®:

  • Here, Ariana Grande is wondering whether she's healed from a breakup and is ready for another relationship. The pensive singer questions whether love is completely off the table.

Her love interest, The Weeknd, tells Grande he will wait until she's ready. He assures her he is in a better place than a few years ago and will give the songstress his all. He doesn't think love is "completely off the table."
  • The slow R&B jam is the second collaboration between Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, following "Love Me Harder" from her 2014 album My Everything.

As well as questioning the future of a relationship, the Toronto singer's verse doubles as a commentary of his career trajectory. At the time he recorded "Love Me Harder," The Weeknd was a rampant drug user leading a hedonistic lifestyle, and he admits that at that time he could not give her his all. He was in "a dark place" back then, haunted by "the hills," but now he assures Grande he can "love you harder than I did before."
  • Grande recorded "Off The Table" for Positions, which comprises 14 short songs. At exactly 4:00 minutes, this is the longest song on the album.
  • Grande and The Weeknd wrote the lyrics between them. It was produced by:

Los Angeles-based producer Tommy "TBHits" Brown, who has worked with Grande since her 2013 debut, Yours Truly and has also worked with Justin Bieber and Travis Scott. He contributed towards all 14 of the Positions tracks.

Minneapolis-born producer and songwriter Steve Franks, better known as Mr. Franks, who has worked with Grande since her Dangerous Woman album. He contributed towards nine of the Positions tracks.

Producer and artist Shintaro Yasuda, who collaborated with Grande's Victorious co-star Matt Bennett on a Thank U Next tribute album.

Producer Travis Sayles, who worked on several songs on Grande's earlier albums, including "Honeymoon Avenue," "True Love," and "Winter Things." He contributed towards five tracks on Positions, his first Ariana credits since her 2015 Christmas & Chill EP.
