Songfacts®:

  • In the years after Creed became one of the most successful bands in America, their frontman Scott Stapp led a hedonistic existence fueled by drugs and alcohol. He eventually stepped back from the abyss and embarked on a more sober, positive lifestyle. However, the Creed singer's troubles weren't over. In 2014, he went through a well-chronicled breakdown that led to him being diagnosed as bipolar. Stapp, who joined AOA after the release of its 2015 debut album to replace the late Scott Weiland, sings here about rising above his self-destructive behavior.

"In 'No Surrender', I addressed those moments in life where you've reached a personal crossroads or crisis," Stapp explained "That place where your back is against the wall and your left with two choices: cave in and crumble, allowing whatever circumstance to break you forever, or to rise up and fight through holding on to that never give up spirit that lies deep within. I detail in the verses personal experiences, as I lived them, that have taken me to that critical place of choice. Am I to give up, stay down and fade away, or get up, fight on and never surrender?"
