Songfacts®:

  • In August 2022, Los Angeles prosecutors charged A$AP Rocky (born Rakim Mayers) with two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, stemming from an alleged Hollywood shooting involving former A$AP Mob associate Terell Ephron, better known as A$AP Relli, the previous November.

At his arraignment in LA Superior Court, Rocky pleaded not guilty. The conditions of his release included: stay at least 100 yards away from Relli, make no contact whatsoever, and relinquish all firearms and ammunition within 24 hours, with paperwork to prove it. In short, he was ordered to keep his distance, keep quiet, and keep his hands clean; legally, at least.

On "Order of Protection," the intro and lead track on Don't Be Dumb - his first full-length album in nearly eight years - Rocky lifts the phrase straight from the courtroom and rebrands it as a personal manifesto.
  • As an album opener, "Order of Protection" hums with paranoia, vindication, and a low-grade readiness for conflict, shaped by years of leaks, delays, and the long road to finishing Don't Be Dumb. Legal phrasing and weapons imagery hover in the background as a reminder of the trial that ultimately ended with Rocky being found not guilty.
  • The song was produced by Kelvin Krash and Soufien 3000, who build a dark, hard-hitting trap framework. Both producers are familiar names in Rocky's orbit; Krash contributed to several other Don't Be Dumb tracks, including "Helicopter," which is Soufien 3000's only other credit on the album.
