Songfacts®:

  • Asleep at the Wheel frontman Ray Benson wrote this song as a tribute to the songwriter Doc Pomus, who wrote the 1956 Ray Charles song "Lonely Avenue." In a Songfacts interview with Benson, he explained: "He was a good friend of mine so I took his line 'Lonely Avenue' and I called it 'Lonely Avenue Revisited.'"

Like the song that inspired it, "Lonely Avenue Revisited" is a bluesy heartbreaker where the singer find himself way down on his luck.
  • Bonnie Raitt is the female vocalist who takes a verse on this track, opening the possibility that the girl he is pining for is feeling the same way.
