Songfacts®:

  • The title track of Austra's third album, frontwoman Katie Stelmanis knew as soon as she penned the song that it would also be the name of the record.
  • The song was inspired by accelerationism, the political and social idea that capitalism should be repurposed, or accelerated in order to generate radical social change. The theory is propagated in Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams book #Manifesto for an Accelerationist Politics. Stelmanis explained to HMV.com:

"I wrote the song immediately after reading this thing called the #Accelerate Manifesto, which is this theory that technology will essentially free us from the constraints of capitalism. I loved how adventurous and innovative the ideas were and that is part of what led me to feel this great optimism after coming from a place of such sadness."
