Songfacts®:

  • "Uh Huh" was the first single from B2K, a boy band that formed around the turn of the millennium (their name is a play on Y2K). They got a record deal with Epic, which issued the single in the summer of 2001 and sent them on the road as an opening act for Lil' Bow Wow. The four group members were each about 16 years old and still learning the craft. They used this time to refine their act and work on their self-titled debut album, which was released in March 2002. With a music video and a promotional push from Epic, "Uh Huh" helped the album reach #2 and sell over 500,000 copies in America. Not bad, but the boy band trend had faded by this time, so they were pushing against the tide.
  • The song was produced by C. "Tricky" Stewart, who around this time was also making hits for Mya ("Case Of The Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do)" and Britney Spears ("Me Against The Music"). Stewart really hit his stride a few years later with his work on Rihanna's "Umbrella" and Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)."
  • Tricky Stewart wrote the song with Malik Crawford, Traci Hale and Tab Nkhereanye. Each verse is sung by a different member of the band, addressing a girl, of course. Each chorus line is punctuated by "uh-huh," which serves as the hook.
  • The video was directed by Erik White, a protégée of Hype Williams. You'll see bold colors, eye-catching outfits and interesting angles - techniques Williams often used. It was one of White's first videos at the helm. He went on to direct many more, including "Hell of a Life" for T.I. and "Good Feeling" for Flo Rida.
  • The video showcases the foursome's slick dance moves that helped them garner attention in the recording industry. It's featured on "Introducing B2K," a DVD EP that includes interviews and some making-of specials. It hit stores May 14, 2002.
  • Jhene Aiko, who was also working with Epic Records, shows up in the video. The plan was to associate her with B2K to help launch her career, but that didn't work out. Her Epic album didn't materialize and Aiko left the label. She emerged in 2014 with her first album, Souled Out, on Def Jam. It connected with listeners and critics alike, showcasing an eclectic sound that was certainly more refined than what she would have put out on Epic a decade earlier.
  • B2K followed up "Uh Huh" with "Gots Ta Be" and "Why I Love You," which were both minor hits. They released their next album, Pandemonium!, later in 2002 and landed a #1 hit with the lead single, "Bump, Bump, Bump," featuring P. Diddy. The group didn't last much longer though. They broke up in 2004 and didn't get back together until 2019, when they reunited for a one-off tour.
