Songfacts®:

  • Although he had been recording since the early '70s, "Bang Bang" was the song that broke through for B.A. Robertson. Released in 1979 on the Asylum label, it runs to 3 minutes 21 seconds and was co-written with Terry Britten, who also produced it.
  • "Bang Bang" is what might be described as an amiable romp through history's greatest love affairs, which apparently included Sherlock Holmes and a certain mind-altering drug. As is well known, Conan Doyle's famous fictional detective was a cocaine addict - a substance that was perfectly legal in Victorian England - but the allusion to this in the song prompted a minor act of censorship.

The line, "Sherlock Holmes alone preferred a little toke of love" was altered in one recording to "Sherlock Holmes alone preferred a little token love." >>>
