Songfacts®:

  • This speed metal number was first released as a digital single on May 8, 2018 to promote the band's Babymetal World Tour 2018. Babymetal later re-recorded the tune with additional vocals by Arch Enemy singer Alissa White-Gluz for their Metal Galaxy album. Babymetal producer Kobametal explained to Kerrang: "We wanted to find someone who would be the best fit for the growl portion. My favourite band is Arch Enemy, and the first person that came to mind was Alissa."
  • Babymetal performed "Distortion" live for the first time on the opening tour date of the band's Babymetal World Tour 2018 at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, Missouri on May 8, 2018.
  • "Distortion" was the first single to be released from Metal Galaxy. The album debuted at #13 on the Billboard 200, becoming the highest-charting Japanese-language album in the chart's history. Metal Galaxy also topped Billboard's Hard Rock Albums chart; in doing so Babymetal became the first Asian act to land at #1 on that tally.
