Songfacts®:

  • Written by Barbra Streisand with John Shanks, Jonas Myrin, Jay Landers, this up-tempo piano-driven song is borne out of the singer's feelings regarding President Trump's relationship with the truth.

You change the facts to justify
Your lips move but your words get in the way

Streisand told Billboard she has written many articles including around 15 Huffington Post pieces about this "Liar in Chief." She added that this is her "protest, in a sense, about this unprecedented time in our history."
  • Streisand clarified that this is not an open letter to the president, but a vent session about her aversion to liars. "I'm not singing to him, I'm singing about him," she's quoted by Barbra Archives. "And, actually, if you listen to the lyrics at first, you don't know who I'm singing to. It could be a relationship song. An argument. A breakup in a marriage. Why do you lie to me? I've never responded to lies. Lies get me crazy. So, that's a big motivation for me writing that song."
  • A dance remix by Dave Aude peaked at #8 on the Dance Club Songs chart in 2018.
