Songfacts®:

  • "Poor Wages" was released on the Harvest label on June 20, 1969, the B-side of the John Lees composition "Brother Thrush."

The lyrics were published in the September 1996 issue of the fanzine Nova Lepidoptera; the sheet music was published originally by Ardmore & Beechwood in 1969.

Written by keyboard player Stuart Wolstenholme, it is described in the December issue of the same magazine as "a bitter reflection on a failed relationship and the difficulties of picking up the pieces afterwards". The song includes the first ever recording (on disc) of a John Lees guitar solo. >>>
