Songfacts®:

  • Dizzee Rascal was just getting started when he got the call to rap on this track. He came to the attention of the Basement Jaxx duo when Felix Buxton heard one of this tracks playing through the speakers at a record shop. Intrigued, Buxton identified the track and contacted Dizzee.

Dizzee ended up writing the majority of the lyric, as the duo wanted him to compose something that fit his style. "He was looking for something to get him out of the ghetto and out of heaviness and small-mindedness," Buxton said in our interview. "So Dizzy, Simon (Ratcliffe), and myself, we sat around for a while and discussed this idea of what that would be."
  • Dizzee and the Jaxx were well aware of the Madonna song "Lucky Star" when they wrote this. They considered it just a working title at first, but as the song evolved, they decided to go with it.
  • Rascal had a specific request when he agreed to do a Basement Jaxx song: no grime. He wanted to get away from that style and try something different. This open-mindedness impressed the duo, who are always looking to expand horizons.
  • The female vocalist on this track is Mona Singh, an Indian actress who also appears in the video.
