Songfacts®:

  • Natasha 'Bat For Lashes' Khan's world fell apart when her squash coach father, Rehmat Khan, left home when she was 11. She found comfort in nursing a horse abandoned in a nearby field and the equine species have subsequently turned up in several of her songs. This opening track to her debut album, for instance, was inspired by a dream of a horse carrying her away.
  • Natasha Khan told Uncut that when she recorded Fur and Gold, she found it restricting singing in a vocal booth. The songstress added: "I took a 50-foot lead into the forest and sang the lead for 'Horse and I' – at the start you can hear the rain on the leaves, the crackle of branches."
